Formula and exclusions

Full boards = floor((clear opening + internal gap) ÷ (actual board face + internal gap)). Used width = boards × face + (boards − 1) × gap. The remaining space is split equally at the two edges. A board wider than the opening gives zero full boards. No ripped final board or equal-gap optimization is assumed.
